The key question is the degree to which these centers can genuinely foster pluralistic debate and interaction. Can these units truly promote quality civic education or will they just be sinecures for politically favored individuals? There is a need for a broader civic education for all college students, but the careerist bent of current college orientation is a more fundamental problem. If the goal is to really get more of the next generation to devote time and even careers to support the democratic project, then we need to make this effort both less ideological and more focused on the basics of republican government. With the obscelesce of noblesse oblige as a core value of the wealthy, civic responsibility needs greater support compared to other partisan values.
